“There is uniformly good news in our employment surveys last month,” said Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research. “Payroll jobs grew. Our labor force grew, and we saw our unemployment rate decline for the first time since August of last year.”
Since July 2015, nonagricultural employment in the state has grown by about 20,200 positions, an increase of 1.21 percent, or 1,683 jobs per month. June’s originally released job gain of 7,900 was revised down to 5,800. Year-to-date seasonally adjusted job growth is 13,000 through July.
Connecticut’s unemployment rate for July was calculated at 5.7 percent, seasonally adjusted. This is down one-tenth of a percentage point from the revised June rate of 5.8 percent but higher by three-tenths of a percentage point from a year ago. The number of the state’s unemployed declined by 1,904 in July.
“This is another important step forward. Our state is continuing to see a steady increase in employment, with 3,000 new private-sector jobs created during the last month. We continue each and every day to grow jobs and grow confidence among our business community,” Gov. Dannel Malloy said. “The needle is moving in the right direction, and we are no doubt going to keep working to build on our growth.”
Connecticut has now recovered 98,800 positions, or 83 percent of the 119,100 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs that were lost in the state during the March 2008 to February 2010 employment recession.
